Tread Carefully the Dragon’s Labyrinth

Located just a few miles north of McAfee Knob along Route 311 near Catawba is the renowned Dragon’s Tooth. This epic hike is short on length (just under 5 miles round-trip) but packs a keen punch that places it deservedly into Virginia’s Triple Crown mountain climbs.

The first two-thirds of the journey up is a pleasant ascension under lush canopy as you enjoy the soft melody of birds and the cascading stream nearby.

All changes just above the connection with the Appalachian Trail at the 1.7-mile mark. Get ready for every form of rock obstacle imaginable, from stone steps to random crumble to sheer facing that requires careful purchase in cracks, crags and cervices in order to move onward and upward.

The climax is worth the effort as you ultimately summit onto a shaded plateau and soon face the 35-foot spire known as the Dragon’s Tooth. Enjoy a welcome respite exploring the peak and taking a breath for the return trip.

Extreme pleasure to meet a hardy adventurer, code-name “Two-Pack,” roughly one third of the way into his epic Georgia-to-Maine AT trek. Prayers for success my friend. You are a gladiator. Likewise, admire the tenacity of the young lady and her canine companions whom I passed fairly far up on the trail.

The Roanoke/Salem area is a great base for any number of hikes and other great activities. After your grind, take in a Salem Red Sox baseball game, visit the Pinball Museum or enjoy a great meal in this growing area of the Commonwealth.

Take a Hike everyone !!!
