Featuring arguably the most iconic geological formation along the entire Appalachian Trail, McAfee Knob draws thousands of hikers each year to this tailor-made photo opportunity. The incredible views from the rocky plateau are indeed hard to match.

Located a dozen or so miles north of Salem, The Knob is the best known of Virginia’s Triple Crown hikes which include nearby Dragon’s Tooth and Tinker Cliffs to the east.

Note: The summit is often crowded, especially on weekends, and you will likely be in line to wait for your keepsake shot. There are a few great scenic spots farther along the ridge worth exploring as well.

Remember where you are — 1,600 feet above the picturesque Catawba Valley. Be cautious and above all avoid becoming the latest “selfie suicide.” On busy days, consider the McAfee Trail Shuttle that will reliably and cheaply carry you to and from the Route 311/I-81 car park and the McAfee Knob entrance lot.
